No Signs

A day in London

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004

Yesterday I went to Daryl’s house at lunchtime. We sat in the sun on his balcony with two mobile phones and rang everyone in the company to try and arrange a fun day. We talk a bit about physics too, as he knows more about the maths behind my final year project than I do. Then Bec arrived home and we sat inside and watched a bit of the FA cup final. It was fun watching Denis Wise kicking people and scratching their faces. Bec microwaved some potatoe and cheese bake that she had in the fridge, which looked a bit off but tasted quite yum.

Daryl and I then caught the bus to Angel, from where we walked to this English pub in the middle of some estate. We were soon joined by Bjorn, Jenny and Matt. After the best cheese sandwich in the world and a few pints of ‘real ale’, we left and wandered down to Angel station to meet Lionel and Sarah. We all then went to ‘Filthy McNasty’s’ for a few pints. The pub is apparently owned by Shane MyGowan. We were joined by Daryl’s mate Will, and then we went for a chinese buffet in Angel, before wandering back up to Daryl’s house.

Trinity Ball Photos

Tuesday, May 18th, 2004

I have uploaded my photos from the Trinity Ball to the web (well, my photos from Ryan’s house - my batteries did not last until the ball started).

I am now going to the park to read all about physics. Final year project starts here :)

WordPress

Monday, May 17th, 2004

I have seen much said about WordPress on the web in the last few days, since Movable Type changed their license. It turns out that WordPress is the answer to my blog woes. I have to write no code and it works. I just unzipped* the tarball. It has a lovely web-admin interface, and it JUST WORKS. I am impressed.

My blog aggregator is quite nice at the moment, but a little bit buggy. It does not catch all the tags all the time - more bug fixing needed. A lot of the permalinks and comments links are not working at the moment. What cool though is the “hardcore nerd shit” powering it :) - All the RSS feeds are parsed and added to a binary tree of posts, which I then traverse to print the blogs. This is not a wonderful way of doing it, because if someone’s website is down, PHP takes ages to time out. I need to use wget to grab the RSS feed, and keep a local cache, and make a cron job to update the cache every so often (10 minutes?). I will then generate a static HTML file, so that my page loads faster then it does now.

I almost signed this ‘Kindest Regards, Marc O’Morain, SCEE Developer Support’., it’s time to go home.
