Windows and Lexmark Printer Drivers
Monday, November 22nd, 2004I have 2 accounts on my home PC: Administrator and Adele. Adele is a user account, Administrator is root. I have a Lexmark printer. The default paper size is US Letter rather than A4. Adele doesn’t have write access to change the printer settings. To fix this I logged out of Adele’s account and logged in as Administrator, and changed the default paper size to A4. I then logged in as Adele again, to find that the default paper size is still US Letter. It seems that the Lexmark software stores a seperate setting per user, but users don’t have the ability to change their settings. This is why I don’t like Windows on this week.
Last week I didn’t like Windows because it overwrote Grub, my bootloader. I had to do some poking with a Fedora CD today to re-install the copy of GRUB that Windows XP silently removed.
o2 Muppets
Saturday, November 20th, 2004Ireland is O2’s most profitable country of operation, and this is why:
- A new Sony Ericsson T630 from O2 costs €119.
- For me to upgrade to a Sony Ericsson T630 upgrade, after 4 years with O2 without ever having upgraded before costs €119
They also claim that the offer for my upgrade is ’special’. This is yet another example of a company that is far more interested in attracting new customers than providing a service for its existing customers.
I have tried to use Azureus for the last week I have given up, and installed G3 Torrent. Both are open-source bit-torrent clients, which I downloaded from Sourceforge.net. Azureus is written in Java, and it makes my PIII 600mhz machine slow to a crawl while it is open. G3 Torrent in written in Python, and I don’t even notice that it is open. Is it just poor coding on the part of the Azureus team, or is Java a terrible language for writing graphical applications?

Commencement
Sunday, November 14th, 2004Last thursday I went to the Computer Science commencement (That means graduation in Trinity-speak). I will have the photos online soon. Before the ceremony Áine, her family and I went for a meal (A big cheese-burger, chips, coke and tea). The ceremony was a little uneventfull: It was in latin and the students were called up five by five to be conferred. We then went to the Atrium for a wine reception (although the wine ran out after about 3 minutes, Trinity spared no expense there). Next we went to Aacute;ine’s new place for some Chinese take away, and we ended the night in the Shelbourne followed by Batmitsu under the Powerscout Centre.

Sunday, November 7th, 2004Another Monday.
Monday, November 1st, 2004Aine bought me a year-long pass for UGC this weekend. She says that I can’t dump her for at least 12 months now.
Misty has a tumor between his heart and lungs, and only has a few weeks left to live. This is the worst news ever.
Aine, John and Sean are moving into a penthouse on North Brunswick Street.
Photos of Aine’s new apartment are online.
