I have just had a most enlightening conversation with ‘R’ from Dell. I am looking to buy a new PC for home use, and we went through a system, with her trying to sell me all the extras, while I was trying to tell her that I didn’t want any. I told her that I didn’t want the ‘free’ printer, and that if I could save money by not buying the printer, I would prefer not to buy it. She countered my argument by saying that the default printer is a very bad printer, and that I should upgrade to a more expensive one. Obviously. I also asked her if it would be possible to not take all the junk software that comes with the PC. She told me that these were items that were not in her power to remove, which is fair enough. Dell like to bundle junk with everything.
Now for the punch line. ‘R’ warned me that I have no word-processing software installed, and no internet security. I told her that that was OK, because I could take care of all that myself. “No”, said ‘R’. She told me that “it is illegal to install any old software this PC”. I replied by asking her “How is it illegal for me to download OpenOffice and install it on my PC?”. Now quite bothered by me she warned me “I’m just telling you that to install software from any old CDs on this PC is illegal“.
